Geographical Coverage

AES Com’s Network has a privileged geographical coverage. It covers the whole Rio de Janeiro city territory and four other neighbor cities: Nova Iguaçu, Duque de Caxias, Belford Roxo and São João de Meriti, covering an area of 2,286 km2 with approximately 9.0 million inhabitants.

The SDH backbone is composed of 16 rings, each one with capacity of STM-16 (2,5 Gbps). The backbone is interconnected to a set of over 170 rings (155 Mbps), known as the Access Network. The access rings connect the customers to the network.

The number of backbone and access rings increases day by day. As the access network expands, the distance from the network to PoPs and to potential customers decreases. As a consequence, the average time to deliver a new service decreases continuously.

The ring topology, together with equipment redundancy, assures the service availability demanded by the market.

In 2006, AES Com deployed a new MetroEthernet Network. With similar topology, this network covers the main business areas in Rio de Janeiro. Since it uses the same optical cables deployed for the SDH network, the new network expansion is achieved by installing equipments at the same sites already served by SDH technology.

As a result, the expansion can take place very quickly and MetroEthernet network is expected to reach the same capillarity as SDH network in two years.

Although MetroEthernet is a statistical network, no oversubscription or traffic priority policies are used, so that AES Com assures the contracted bandwidth 100% of the time.
