History

AES Com was created in August, 1998 in the frame of the privatization of state-owned telephony carriers and the deregulation of telecommunications services in Brazil, which was being launched at that time. Named Light Telecom Ltda., it was a subsidiary of Light Sinergias Ltda., controlled by Light SESA, the incumbent electricity supplier in Rio de Janeiro.

In November, 2001, after a share exchange between AES and EDF, companies that held control of Light SESA, Light Telecom was named AES Communications Ltda. At this time, AES Com was controlled by AES Elpa S.A., which became an AES Group company in February 2002.

AES is one of the world’s largest power companies. Present in 28 countries on five continents, AES owns and operates a diverse and growing portfolio of generation and distribution businesses with the capacity to serve 100 million people worldwide. Present in Brazil since 1995, AES group in Brazil is composed today by 7 companies that operate in electricity and telecommunication markets.

In December 2003, AES Com received its current name, AES Communications Rio de Janeiro S.A. and is now controlled by Braziliana Energia S.A., a holding company created as a consequence of a shareholder’s agreement between AES Group (50,01%) and BNDES - Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social (49,99%).

BNDES is the biggest investment bank in Brazil. It is an organization under the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade and its main objective is to support industrial and infrastructure projects that contribute to the development of the country.
